The Medicinal Uses of Mangosteen Juice Are Legendary!
Historical Highlights
Not to be confused with the mango (no relationship!) the mangosteen is actually associated with St. John’s Wort and is the approximate size of a tangerine.
Originally this fruit was found growing wild in southeast Asia, primarily on the Malaysian Peninsula. First mentioned as early as 25 centuries ago in Chinese medical texts, mangosteens have had a long and difficult journey to other parts of the world because they travelled poorly, and both the seeds and fruit were highly perishable. So difficult was their transport that it was not until the 1800’s that mangosteens finally took root in Europe.
The medicinal uses of mangosteens from ancient times is legendary. They were used to treat everything from infections, diarrhea and dysentery, to ulcers and as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Applied to the skin, the powder of the rind was and still is a remedy for such disorders as eczema. From Thailand and India to the Caribbean and South America, it has treated everything from wounds, malaria, sexually transmitted diseases, fever, infection and fatigue.
Today the national fruit of Thailand, mangosteens , were until 2007 illegal to import to the US due to possible contamination by the Asian fruit fly!
