Jalepeno Juice Fights Cancer!
Historically Speaking
This small and unassuming little vegetable, Jalapeño, packs a powerful punch due to its ‘capsaicin’ content. A member of the chili pepper family, it is quite possibly the earliest cultivated veggie from Central America, dating back as far as 9500 years! From ancient Mexico, it made its way south and north, and finally, during the seventeenth century westward with explorers to Europe and Asia, where it has flourished ever since.
The jalapeño was considered a status symbol among the rich of the Americas, since other spices were in short supply and so expensive. Medicinal uses ranged from an inducement for sweating to its intense purgative effects. Jalapeño smoke was also employed as a fumigant. Jalapeño also played an important part in the rites and superstitions of both South America and Asia, where a bunch of them tied together and waved over one’s head or hung over an entrance was – and to this day is still — believed to ward off evil. Interestingly, this simple little pepper was the first of its kind to enter outer space, on a NASA shuttle!
